With over 20 years of cosmetic surgery experience, Dr Anoop Rastogi performs breast fat transfer surgery for his patients in Sydney. You can browse some of Dr Rastogi’s Fat Transfer to Breast before-and-after photos here.
What is a fat transfer to breast surgery?
A fat transfer, also called fat grafting, is a technique that removes fat from an area of the body and inserts it into another. This is done using liposuction. In the case of a breast augmentation mammoplasty, the harvested fat tissue is inserted into the breasts in order to increase their volume.
The surgery involves smaller incisions than traditional breast augmentation mammoplasty and creates a comparatively more subtle result. This means it may be suitable for patients who wish for a slight increase in breast size, or who wish to add extra volume and shape alongside implants. During the procedure, Dr Rastogi takes fat cells from the body and processes them to remove any impurities. He then administers the fat tissue into the breasts, aiming to create the desired shape, size, and proportion.
Patients may choose to have fat removed from areas such as the arms or thighs. This aspect of the surgery may be an additional benefit, as it means they can target multiple areas of the body at once. Patients should be aware, however, that results depend on the individual patient and their surgical plan.
Who is the procedure for?
Fat transfer to the breasts during a breast augmentation mammoplasty can be suitable for many people. Typically, patients are women who wish for a slight increase in breast size, a correction of asymmetry, or to restore volume after volume loss. Additionally, it can be an option for women who have had a mastectomy.
To be a good candidate, the patient should first have realistic expectations. You should discuss what you expect from your procedure with Dr. Rastogi, and he can talk you through what kind of results you may reasonably expect. Also, good candidates are physically and mentally healthy, non-smokers, and at a stable weight.
Since the surgery requires harvesting fat tissue from the body, patients will have to carry some excess fat. This may be in areas such as the abdomen, hips, arms, or legs.
Your consultation
Every breast fat transfer procedure is different because every patient is different. In order to know what the surgery may look like for you, you may benefit from a private meeting with Dr Rastogi. He can create a plan that aligns with your cosmetic goals by inquiring about your desired breast shape and size, as well as your desired donor areas. He can assess your health and suitability, answer any questions, and provide you with more details about the surgery.
When you arrive for your appointment, it is a good idea to be prepared with any questions you wish to ask regarding your procedure. You should also be ready to inform Dr Rastogi about any medical issues that may inform your treatment plan.
Common surgery risks and complications
Patients should be conscious that any surgery carries with it certain risks and the potential for complications. Some of these risks are specific to your chosen procedure. It is important to be aware of these risks and know how to reduce them through careful preparation for surgery and aftercare during recovery.
The risks of breast fat transfer procedure can include:
- Slow or poor healing
- Fat necrosis
- Infection
- Bleeding
- Poor scarring
- Poor results
- Further surgery
These risks are uncommon, but they can occur. Patients can also expect common side effects such as swelling and bruising in their treatment sites. These should fade with appropriate aftercare.
